Košice Zoo sits in the forested hills of the Kavečany borough, about seven kilometres north-west of the city centre, and is one of the largest zoos in Central Europe by area — over 280 hectares, though only a fraction is developed for visitors. The setting is the real attraction: you walk through genuine woodland and meadow, with paddocks for European bison, wolves, and bears arranged along trails that climb up and down the hillside. It feels much more like a wildlife park than the cramped city zoos that travellers tend to picture.
The collection leans towards Eurasian and African animals, with a respectable big cats section, primates, and a steppe-animal area with Przewalski's horses and camels. There's a small dinosaur-themed park aimed at children, and a chairlift connects the zoo to a nearby ski slope in winter — a quirk worth knowing about. Allow at least half a day if you plan to walk the whole site; the hills add up, and there is a lot of ground to cover. The zoo is reachable by city bus 29 from the centre.
