Jesenice

Upper Sava industrial town below the Karawanks, useful for rail links and ironworks history.

Jesenice is not the pretty face of the Slovenian Alps, and it is more interesting for admitting that. This is a working Upper Sava town shaped by iron, railways, and the steep wall of the Karawanks, sitting between Bled, Kranjska Gora, and the Austrian border.

The reason to stop is the industrial heritage around Stara Sava, where old ironworks buildings, workers' housing, and manor houses have been gathered into a compact historic quarter. The Upper Sava Museum gives context to a town that most travellers otherwise see only from the train window.

Jesenice also has a practical role. Its railway station is an important junction for the Bohinj Railway and cross-border routes, and buses run toward Bled and the ski valleys. If you are chasing alpine views, continue west; if you want to understand the labour and industry behind this part of Slovenia, give Jesenice a few hours.
