The Piran Aquarium has run on the small Punta promontory since 1964 and is the oldest public aquarium in the eastern Adriatic. It is a modest but well-curated place: a couple of dozen tanks, each devoted to a different ecosystem of the local sea, from rock pools to deeper offshore reefs.
The labelling is clear and informative; the building is small enough that a visit takes about an hour. It is the obvious stop for travelling families and a quietly pleasant one for adults too — particularly the tank of long, ghost-white catsharks that prowl back and forth in the gloom. Closed in winter.
