Tartini House

Tartini House, on the north side of Tartini Square, is the building in which the composer Giuseppe Tartini was born in 1692. The medieval lower floors and the eighteenth-century painted ceilings have been carefully preserved; one of his original violins is on display alongside personal documents, portraits, and a small exhibit on the music of his time.

It is a small museum — half an hour does it — and ideally combined with a visit to the cathedral. Concerts are sometimes held in the upstairs hall in summer; check the season programme at the door.

A story
Giuseppe Tartini's family was prosperous enough by Piran standards to send him to Padua to study law. He ignored most of his lessons, eloped with a teenage girl, took refuge with the Franciscans in Assisi, and only there discovered the violin — going on to compose the Devil's Trill, one of the most demanding pieces in the baroque violin repertoire.
