The Carrera del Darro is Granada's most atmospheric street — a narrow riverside lane running east from Plaza Nueva along the Río Darro, with the Albaicín rising steeply on the left and the Alhambra wall visible through the trees above on the right. Medieval bridges cross the river, and the street is lined with some of the finest old buildings in the city: El Bañuelo (the 11th-century hammam), the Casa Castril (which houses the Archaeological Museum), and the church of Santa Ana above the Plaza Nueva end.
In the morning it's relatively quiet; by afternoon it fills with visitors heading toward the Alhambra. The walk from Plaza Nueva to El Bañuelo takes about ten minutes and passes enough interesting architecture to keep your head turning the whole way. Continue beyond El Bañuelo and the pavement ends, replaced by a rougher path that leads up into the Sacromonte hillside.
