San Ildefonso is the second great church of Jaén after the cathedral. It is Gothic at the core (mostly 14th century) but with a Renaissance south facade by Vandelvira and a neoclassical west front by Ventura Rodríguez. The mix sounds awkward and is, but the church is genuinely striking.
Inside is kept the icon of the Virgen de la Capilla, Jaén's patron and the focus of a 17th-century miracle (the Virgin reputedly descended onto a column of cloud over the church in 1430). The feast day on 10-11 June fills the surrounding streets with processions, music, and stalls.
