Getting Around

The historic centre is small and pedestrianised — almost everything you will want to see is within a 15-minute walk of the Cathedral. The municipal bus network (EMT) covers the rest of the city; a single ride costs €1.40 and a ten-trip card €8.30. Useful routes are the number 35 up to Gibralfaro Castle, the number 11 east along the coast to Pedregalejo and El Palo, and the number 91 north to the Botanical Garden.

A short metro line connects the western suburbs and the university to the city centre, and the suburban Cercanías train (line C-1) runs every 20–30 minutes from María Zambrano station to the airport, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, and Fuengirola. The same María Zambrano station is the high-speed AVE terminal for Madrid (2.5 hours), Córdoba, and Sevilla.

Taxis are white, plentiful, and reasonably priced — a city ride is around €5, the airport €15–20. Renting a car is only worthwhile if you plan to explore the wider province; in the city it is more hassle than help and parking is expensive.
