Culis Monumentalibus

Eduardo Úrculo's monumental sculpture of five bronze posteriors

A group of five large bronze buttocks on a stone plinth in Plaza de la Escandalera, created by sculptor Eduardo Úrculo in 2001. The title is mock-Latin for "monumental backsides," and the piece is exactly what it sounds like — five oversized, polished rear ends arranged in a row. It is cheerfully irreverent and one of the most photographed sculptures in the city.

Oviedo takes its public art seriously but not solemnly, and this piece fits the city's character perfectly. It sits at the edge of the main square, easy to spot on any walk through the centre. The bronze has been rubbed shiny by thousands of hands, particularly on the most prominent curve.
