Monument to Woody Allen

Life-size bronze of the filmmaker who put Oviedo on screen

A life-size bronze statue of Woody Allen strolling down the street, umbrella in hand, installed in 2003 on Calle de las Milicias Nacionales. Oviedo has a curious affection for the director — he praised the city effusively during a visit, and later featured it in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, where Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem's characters visit.

The statue is one of several public sculptures scattered around the old town — Oviedo has made a deliberate effort to fill its streets with figurative bronze works. Most visitors pose for a photo next to Woody. The statue is an easy find on the pedestrian street between Plaza de la Escandalera and the old quarter.

A story
Woody Allen visited Oviedo in 2002 while scouting locations, and fell for the city so hard he called it a "delicious, exotic, beautiful, clean, pleasant, tranquil, and pedestrianized fairy-tale city." He used it as a setting in Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), and the city responded by erecting this statue on Calle de las Milicias Nacionales in 2003.
