Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias

Regional fine arts museum with strong Spanish and Asturian collections

Oviedo's fine arts museum occupies three connected buildings near the cathedral and holds one of the better regional art collections in Spain. The permanent collection runs from medieval Asturian work through El Greco, Zurbarán, and Goya to 20th-century Asturian painters like Evaristo Valle and Nicanor Piñole. There is also a solid selection of Italian and Flemish painting.

The museum is free and rarely crowded, making it an easy stop between the cathedral and the old town plazas. The building itself — a combination of an 18th-century palace and a modern glass extension — is worth a look. Allow about an hour for a thorough visit.
