Gorona del Viento

The Gorona del Viento hydrowind power station is one of El Hierro's most unusual attractions — an integrated wind and pumped-hydro facility that has allowed the island to generate the majority of its electricity from renewable sources since 2015. The system combines five wind turbines on the ridge above La Frontera with a lower reservoir near the coast and an upper reservoir in the Tigaday crater, pumping water uphill when wind power is surplus and generating hydroelectric power when demand exceeds wind supply.

The facility is visible from the road above La Frontera and can be viewed from the outside. There are occasional guided tours for groups interested in the engineering and sustainability story. El Hierro's target is to become fully carbon-neutral, and the hydrowind system is the centrepiece of that ambition. The island has also pioneered electric vehicle infrastructure and sustainable agriculture as part of the same programme.

A story
In February 2018, El Hierro ran entirely on renewable energy for 18 consecutive days — wind turbines and a pumped-hydro storage system providing 100% of the island's electricity with zero diesel generation. The system works by pumping water up to a crater lake when wind power exceeds demand, then releasing it through turbines when power is needed. It was the first island in the world to achieve sustained 100% renewable electricity, and the technology is being studied as a model for other small islands.
