Mirador de la Peña is El Hierro's great balcony, a César Manrique-designed viewpoint set high above the El Golfo valley. The building keeps Manrique's familiar balance of lava, glass, planting and clean lines, but the real spectacle is the drop: cliffs, banana plots, ocean and the island's crescent-shaped north coast.
Come when visibility is good and do not rush it. This is one of the places where El Hierro's scale suddenly makes sense, with the island's volcanic wall and human settlement laid out in one sweep.
