Corralejo is the main resort town in the north of Fuerteventura and the most lively part of the island — which is relative, since Fuerteventura is not a lively island by nature. It has a working fishing harbour where the morning catch still comes in and decent fish restaurants line the old port, which sits alongside the tourist restaurants and bars of the newer development. From Corralejo you can take the 25-minute ferry to Lanzarote or a small boat to the uninhabited volcanic islet of Lobos.
The town is the best base on the island for surfers and windsurfers who want to explore the north coast. El Cotillo and Majanicho, both accessible by short drives west, offer consistent waves for more experienced surfers, while the sheltered Playa de Corralejo in the harbour area is calmer. South of town, the enormous dune beach protected by the Parque Natural de Corralejo stretches for kilometres and is one of the finest beaches in the Canary Islands.
