Playa de Sotavento

Playa de Sotavento on the Jandía peninsula is the most famous windsurfing beach in the world — a vast stretch of white sand backed by a shallow turquoise lagoon formed by a dramatic sandspit. The lagoon provides flat water for freestylers and beginners; the open ocean beyond the spit gives wave riders what they need. The Windsurfing and Kitesurfing World Cup takes place here each summer, drawing the best riders in the world to compete in front of what becomes a sizable beach audience.

Even if you have no interest in water sports, the beach is one of the most beautiful on the island — long, wide, and clean. The water in the lagoon is warm and shallow enough to walk for hundreds of metres. Costa Calma is the nearest resort town to the north; Morro Jable is the larger town at the tip of the peninsula. Rental gear and lessons are available from several schools along the beach.

A story
The Playa de Sotavento lagoon is only possible because of a specific geography: a long sand spit creates a shallow tidal lagoon that traps the wind while flattening the water. At low tide the lagoon almost disappears; at high tide it fills and becomes the ideal flat-water training ground. The Windsurfing World Cup has used it since 1983.
