The Parque Natural de Corralejo protects a landscape of magnificent white sand dunes that stretches for nearly ten kilometres along Fuerteventura's northeast coast. The dunes, up to 30 metres high in places, are a constantly shifting sea of pale sand set against vivid blue water, and they are among the most striking natural landscapes in the Canary Islands. On a clear day you can see Lanzarote across the strait.
The beach backed by the dunes is generally less crowded than the resort beaches further south, partly because it is exposed to the trade winds that make conditions lively. The water is clear and the sand is fine. A marked trail runs through the dunes, and you can walk for hours without retracing your steps. The two hotels inside the park are a reminder of what was nearly lost; the decision to protect the rest came just in time.
