Playa de Cofete

Playa de Cofete is the wildest and most dramatic beach on Fuerteventura — a vast, exposed Atlantic beach on the remote western side of the Jandía peninsula, backed by the steep escarpment of the Jandía mountains and stretching for over 12 kilometres with almost nobody on it. The waves are too strong for swimming in most conditions, but the scale and the raw beauty of the landscape are extraordinary. This is Fuerteventura at its most elemental.

Getting there requires either a 4WD vehicle or a long drive over a rough track from Morro Jable — the road beyond the paved section is unpaved and corrugated, passable but not comfortable in a small car. The effort filters out all but the determined, which is exactly why it remains so empty. A few jeep tours run from the main resorts. The Villa Winter on the hillside above is visible on the approach and worth a stop for the views and the stories, real or invented.

A story
The isolated Villa Winter on the hillside above Cofete has generated decades of conspiracy theories — its German owner built it during World War II in this remote spot, and rumours persist that it served as a Nazi submarine resupply station or escape route. No credible evidence supports this, but the villa's remoteness and mysterious past make it one of Fuerteventura's most discussed buildings.
