Baiona

Galician harbour town on the Ría de Vigo, first in Europe to hear of Columbus's return.

Baiona is a small harbour town on the southern shore of the Ría de Vigo, in the southwest corner of Galicia. It holds a notable place in history: on 1 March 1493, the Pinta arrived here carrying news of Columbus's first voyage to the Americas — making Baiona the first town in Europe to learn of the discovery.

The old town clusters around the harbour, its narrow streets lined with stone houses, seafood restaurants, and the occasional granite church. The waterfront promenade is lively in summer, and the town beach at Praia da Ribeira is good for a quick swim. Better beaches lie a short drive south along the coast toward Oia.

The main sight is the Monterreal Castle, now a parador, which occupies a rocky peninsula jutting into the bay. You can walk the fortress walls for free — the circuit takes about twenty minutes and the views over the Cíes Islands and the mouth of the ría are excellent. A replica of the Pinta is moored in the harbour and can be visited. Above the town, the Virgin of the Rock statue offers the best panoramic views of the coast.

Baiona is a popular day trip from Vigo, about twenty kilometres to the north, but it rewards a longer stay if you want a quieter base for exploring the Rías Baixas coast.

Eating Out

Baiona is a serious seafood town. The harbour provides mussels, barnacles (percebes), razor clams, and whatever fish came in that morning. The old town's waterfront restaurants are uniformly oriented toward seafood, with a few places doing a perfectly decent menú del día for a reasonable price at lunch.

Percebes — goose barnacles — are a Galician specialty and Baiona is one of the better places to try them. They are expensive, require no skill to prepare (they are simply boiled in salted water), and taste intensely of the sea. Order a small ración to start.

Getting There

Baiona is 20 kilometres south of Vigo along a coastal road. From Vigo, buses run regularly to Baiona on the ATSA line — the journey takes around 45 minutes. Vigo itself has good rail connections to the rest of Spain, and an airport (Vigo-Peinador) with domestic flights and limited European connections.

By car, the drive from Vigo along the coast road (PO-325) is pleasant, passing through Nigrán and along the shore of the ría. There is paid parking in Baiona, though in July and August the town fills quickly on weekends.
