The old town occupies the landward end of the peninsula, a compact grid of narrow streets lined with medieval churches, Baroque mansions, and small squares. The Romanesque church of Santa María del Campo is the finest building, its carved west portal showing a mix of biblical scenes and Galician folk imagery. Nearby, the Colegiata de Santa María del Campo dates from the 12th century.
The Plaza de Azcárraga is the social hub of the old town, ringed by outdoor tables and busy from midday. From here, the cobbled streets lead down toward the fishing port and the city beach of A Coruña.
