Casa Museo Picasso

The apartment where Picasso lived age 9–13, now a museum of his early work

Pablo Picasso lived in this apartment on Calle Payo Gómez from 1891 to 1895, between the ages of nine and thirteen, while his father taught at A Coruña's School of Fine Arts. The museum recreates the family's living quarters with period furniture and displays copies of the sketches and paintings Picasso made during these years — a prolific output for a child, and already technically accomplished.

The original works are elsewhere (mainly in Barcelona's Picasso Museum and the Museu de Belles Arts de la Nostra Senyora), but the apartment itself, with its high ceilings and tall windows overlooking a narrow old-town street, gives a genuine sense of the young artist's domestic world. The exhibition contextualises the La Coruña years in his later development.

Entry is inexpensive. The museum is small and can be covered in 45 minutes.

A story
Picasso spent four formative years in this apartment while his father taught at the local School of Fine Arts. By the time the family left in 1895, the thirteen-year-old had already produced hundreds of drawings and paintings. His father reportedly gave Pablo his own palette and brushes and vowed never to paint again after seeing what his son could do.
