Norrköping's old town centre, on the north side of the Motala Ström, has a modest but appealing collection of 18th and 19th-century buildings. The main pedestrian street runs through a mix of independent shops, cafes, and the occasional timber-framed house that survived the various fires that periodically swept 18th-century Swedish towns. The central square, Stortorget, has a market on weekday mornings.
The old town is quieter and more local than the Industrilandskapet area and gives a better sense of everyday Norrköping. Several of the best independent restaurants and coffee shops are found in the streets off the main pedestrian zone. The short walk from Stortorget to the river and back through the mill district is one of the best short urban walks in eastern Sweden.
