Industrilandskapet (The Industrial Landscape)

The Industrilandskapet is Norrköping's most distinctive quarter — a stretch of 19th-century textile mills and factory buildings running along both banks of the Motala Ström river through the city centre. The buildings are beautifully preserved in their original brick and iron, and have been converted into the Linköping University campus, several museums, concert halls, and restaurants. The combination of grand industrial architecture and the fast-flowing river makes it one of the most attractive post-industrial urban landscapes in Scandinavia.

Walking through the area, you pass the old Holmen paper mill, the Strömsholmen island, and a series of weirs where the river drops through a series of falls. The area is best explored on foot — the walking routes along the water are well-signposted and there are benches and cafes at strategic points. Evening is particularly striking, when the mill buildings are illuminated.

A story
The factories along the Motala Ström were powered by a system of canals and sluices first engineered in the 17th century by Louis de Geer, the Walloon industrialist who built Sweden's first large-scale iron foundries. The watercourses are still visible and functional today, running beneath the university buildings and museums that now fill the old mill halls.
