Jesmond

Leafy Victorian suburb with a young, lively dining and drinking scene

A mile north of the centre by Metro, Jesmond is the prosperous Victorian suburb that contains most of the student rentals and the better-off professionals in roughly equal measure. The result is a high street — Osborne Road — with a denser cluster of bars, brunch spots, and small restaurants than anywhere outside the city centre. Acorn Road in West Jesmond has the more grown-up version of the same.

The neighbourhood's hidden gem is Jesmond Dene, a steep wooded river valley designed by Lord Armstrong in the 1860s and gifted to the city. Waterfalls, a working watermill, a small petting zoo, and three miles of paths run along the burn — a startlingly rural strip of woodland twenty minutes' walk from Eldon Square.
