A mile-long wooded river gorge running north from Jesmond Vale, donated to the city by Lord Armstrong in 1883. Paths follow the Ouseburn through dense woodland, past waterfalls, an old watermill, a stone-walled grotto, and the small Jesmond Dene Pets Corner — a free petting zoo with goats, owls, and reptiles. The Dene is best appreciated on foot, top to bottom, starting at the Mill Bridge.
A surprising piece of country for a city of this size. The Old Mill at the southern end has a small heritage display. Allow an hour for a quick walk, three for a full circuit including a stop at the cafe.
