A short walk across the Millennium Bridge from Newcastle's Quayside, the Baltic occupies the brick shell of a 1950s Rank Hovis flour mill on the south bank. Inside, six floors of column-free gallery space rotate exhibitions of major international contemporary art — Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley, Yoko Ono, Mona Hatoum have all shown here. Entry is free.
The Rooftop Restaurant and the Viewing Box on the top floor offer the best view of the Tyne bridges in either city — and both are accessible by lift without an exhibition ticket. Allow two hours.
