Theatre Royal

Grade I-listed 1837 theatre on Grey Street, with a busy national touring schedule

The cultural anchor of Grey Street, designed by John and Benjamin Green and opened in 1837 with Macbeth on the bill. The pillared portico is the architectural pivot of the whole curve of the street. The interior — gilt, red plush, three balconies — was restored to its Victorian appearance in 2011 and is as handsome as any provincial theatre in the country.

The schedule runs the full range from RSC and National Theatre tours to opera, dance, comedy, and pantomime. The Royal Shakespeare Company has a long-standing residency every spring. Front-of-house tours run occasionally on Saturdays.
