Thomas Heatherwick's first major piece of public art, a glass-and-resin paved plaza outside the Laing Art Gallery designed to give the gallery a coherent forecourt. The brilliant blue surface was intended to "curl up" at the edges to form benches and bollards; the experiment has aged unevenly but is still worth a look.
A two-minute stop on the way into or out of the Laing. The whole installation reads as a strange, glittering carpet in the heart of an otherwise ordinary corner of the city.
