Newcastle's oldest public park, opened in 1873 in response to a worker's petition for "ready access to some open ground for the purpose of healthful recreation". A central lake, a bandstand, two bowling greens, formal flower beds, and a children's playground sit on twenty acres immediately north of St James' Park football stadium.
Useful for a half-hour breather between sights. The cafe by the lake is unremarkable; the park's role is mostly to give the inner city a green pause.
