Bath Abbey

The last great medieval church built in England, Bath Abbey dominates the city centre with its soaring Perpendicular Gothic windows. The interior is remarkable for its fan-vaulted ceiling, one of the finest in the country, and the sheer amount of light that pours through the enormous stained glass windows — earning it the nickname "the Lantern of the West."

The Abbey has undergone a major restoration in recent years, including the installation of underfloor heating powered by the hot springs that run beneath the building. You can climb the 212 steps of the tower for panoramic views over the city and surrounding hills. The Abbey Heritage Vaults below tell the story of the site from Saxon monastery to the present day.

A story
The west front features carved stone angels climbing up and down two ladders, inspired by a dream that Bishop Oliver King had in 1499. King dreamt of angels ascending to heaven on ladders, and interpreted it as a divine command to rebuild the church. The ladders and angels remain one of the most distinctive church facades in England.
