Jane Austen Centre

A small museum on Gay Street dedicated to Bath's most famous literary resident. The permanent exhibition explores Jane Austen's time in Bath, her complicated feelings about the city, and how the place shaped her writing. Costumed guides lead introductory talks, and there is a Regency-era tearoom upstairs serving cream teas and period-inspired cakes.

The centre is not a grand museum — it occupies a single Georgian townhouse and can be seen in about an hour — but it does a good job of bringing Austen's Bath to life. The staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The annual Jane Austen Festival in September fills the streets with Regency costumes and is one of Bath's most distinctive events.

A story
Austen lived in Bath from 1801 to 1806 and set two of her novels here — Northanger Abbey and Persuasion — yet she was famously ambivalent about the city. In a letter to her sister Cassandra she wrote, "It will be two years tomorrow since we left Bath, and I am not yet reconciled to living here." The centre sits on Gay Street, where she actually lived for a time.
