A small man-made island in the River Don created in the 12th century to power a corn mill, later the heart of Sheffield's cutlery and steel industries, and from the 2010s onwards the city's most interesting independent quarter. Old workshops, foundries, and metal-bashing sheds have been turned into craft breweries, independent restaurants, gin distilleries, and design studios.
The Kelham Island Museum sits on the original island; the Kelham Island Tavern across the road is one of England's most celebrated real-ale pubs. Cutlery Works, a vast food hall in a former cutlery factory, opens onto the canal towpath. The whole area can be walked in an hour but tends to absorb a whole evening.
