A surprisingly large museum housed in a complete Victorian-era fire and police station on the north edge of the centre. The collection runs from horse-drawn fire pumps to a 1970s Yorkshire Police helicopter, with cells you can lock yourself into and a working ambulance you can climb inside.
Volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly. Children love the place — there are uniforms to try on, a fire pole to slide down, and ride-on engines. Allow two hours; closed on a few weekdays so check ahead. Easily combined with the Kelham Island area, ten minutes' walk away.
