Wharncliffe Crags

Gritstone edge north of Sheffield popular with climbers, walkers and mountain bikers

Wharncliffe Crags is a gritstone edge north of Sheffield, long used by climbers and now also popular with walkers and mountain bikers. The crags give a tougher, rougher taste of the landscape that begins almost as soon as Sheffield's suburbs thin out.

For visitors, it is a good choice if you want outdoor Sheffield without heading all the way into the Peak District. The paths can be muddy and the riding lines are serious in places, but the woodland, rock and views make a satisfying half-day escape from the city.
