Sheffield General Cemetery

Atmospheric Victorian garden cemetery on the slopes of Highfield

Address Cemetery Road, Sheffield S11 8FT

A sprawling Victorian cemetery on the slopes south of the centre, opened in 1836 by the Sheffield General Cemetery Company as a privately run alternative to the overflowing parish graveyards. The Anglican chapel, the Nonconformist chapel, and the impressive Egyptian-style gatehouse all survive in various states of repair, surrounded by 87,000 burials including many of the Victorian industrialists who built modern Sheffield.

The whole site is now run by a community trust as both a memorial space and an informal nature reserve. Free to enter, open daylight hours. Tours of the catacombs are run occasionally. A short walk from the Botanical Gardens and Hunters Bar.
