Graves Art Gallery

Permanent gallery of British and European fine art above the Central Library

Address Surrey Street, Sheffield S1 1XZ

A small but excellent gallery on the upper floor of Sheffield's Central Library, holding the city's collection of British art from the 18th century onwards alongside a smattering of Old Masters and modern European works. The collection includes Cézanne, Klee, Picasso, Sickert, Stanley Spencer, and a number of important pieces by the Sheffield-born Joe Scarborough.

It was founded in 1934 by the bequest of the local industrialist John George Graves, who built up his collection specifically to be given to the city. The gallery is free, often almost empty, and richer than it has any business being. Take the lift to the third floor. Closed Sundays.
