Greyfriars Kirkyard

Atmospheric Old Town graveyard with the famous Greyfriars Bobby statue.

Address Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh EH1 2QQ
Opening Hours 10.30am-4.30pm

A wonderfully atmospheric graveyard in the heart of the Old Town, best known for the statue of Greyfriars Bobby — the Skye terrier who is said to have sat by his master's grave for fourteen years. Bobby's own grave is just inside the gate, usually piled with sticks and toys; his master John Gray rests in the kirkyard proper. The 17th-century tombs around the perimeter are worth slow study, and the National Covenant was signed inside the kirk in 1638. JK Rowling reportedly took several Harry Potter character names from the headstones here.

If you want to follow the Bobby story, start at Greyfriars Bobby's Bar on Candlemaker Row, then walk into the kirkyard.
