The National Museum of Scotland is Scotland's most visited museum and one of the best free museums in Britain. The collection runs from the geological prehistory of Scotland through the Pictish and Viking periods, the medieval kingdom, the industrial revolution and the modern nation, with particularly strong holdings in natural history, science and technology, and Scottish design.
The building itself is a delight — the Victorian Grand Gallery, with its cast-iron galleries rising to a glass roof, is one of Edinburgh's finest interiors. Entry is free to the permanent collection, though major temporary exhibitions charge. Allow at least three hours; a full day rewards the patient. The café in the Grand Gallery is decent and reasonably priced.
