Lower Lonsdale

Lower Lonsdale — known locally as LoLo — is the historic waterfront district at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue, where the SeaBus terminal, the Lonsdale Quay market, the Shipyards, and the original 1880s commercial strip all meet. It is the most walkable urban area on the North Shore and the natural base for a day spent on this side of the harbour.

The character is post-industrial: red-brick warehouses converted into restaurants, the old shipyards reused as a public plaza, kinetic sculptures made from salvaged cranes, breweries in former machine shops. Restaurants are excellent — Black + Blue and Tap & Barrel for casual harbour-view options, Park Distillery for cocktails, Burgoo for comfort food in the evenings.

The Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood is also home to the Polygon Gallery, the Lonsdale Quay public market, the Shipbuilders Square public space, and the North Vancouver City Library — a striking modern building by Diamond and Schmitt across the road from the waterfront.
