The ivy-covered chateau looming over the Inner Harbour, designed by Francis Rattenbury (the same architect as the Parliament Buildings opposite) and opened by Canadian Pacific in 1908. Afternoon tea in the lobby lounge is the city's most enduring ritual: scones, finger sandwiches, the works, served on bone china. It is not cheap and you need to book, but the room itself is the point.
Address: 721 Government Street.
