The Burlington Bay James N. Allan Skyway is the pair of high-level bridges that carry the Queen Elizabeth Way over the canal between Lake Ontario and Hamilton Harbour. The original eastbound span was completed in 1958 with a clearance of 36 metres above the canal — enough for the largest lake freighters at the time — and the twin westbound span was added in 1985 to handle growing traffic.
The Skyway is not a destination in itself, but the view from the deck looking south across Hamilton Harbour to the steel mills and the escarpment beyond is one of the most photographed industrial landscapes in Ontario. The waterfront trail under the bridge offers a more leisurely ground-level view of the structure.
