Port Dover is a small Lake Erie town in Norfolk County, on Ontario's south coast. It is a beach-and-harbour place: fishing boats, a pier, a wooden lighthouse, summer crowds, and the smell of fried perch near the water.
The town is best in warm weather, when Erie Beach fills with day-trippers and the harbour feels busy rather than sleepy. Port Dover Lighthouse and the Harbour Museum give the waterfront some depth beyond the beach, while the Lynn Valley Trail makes a good easy ride or walk inland.
Port Dover also has one odd claim to fame: every Friday the 13th, motorcyclists ride in from across Ontario and beyond. If you like the spectacle, it is the liveliest time to come. If you don't, choose any other summer weekend.
