Finnish Labour Temple (Hoito Restaurant)

Historic Finnish-Canadian hall on Bay Street, home of the legendary Hoito

A red-brick monument to Thunder Bay's Finnish heritage, the Finnish Labour Temple on Bay Street is a Heritage Canada property and the most visible reminder of the city's deep Finnish roots. The building has hosted political rallies, cultural performances, and the legendary Hoito Restaurant in its basement — for decades the city's mandatory Finnish-pancake breakfast spot, until it closed in 2020.

Efforts to reopen the Hoito in some form continue. The Labour Temple itself remains a working community building and is worth a walk past in a city tour that includes the Bay and Algoma district.

A story
Thunder Bay has the largest Finnish population in Canada and one of the largest outside Finland — descendants of immigrants who came to work in mining and forestry from the 1880s. The Finnish Labour Temple, built in 1910, was the cultural and political centre of that community, and the Hoito restaurant in the basement — famous for its pancakes — fed lumberjacks for over a century until it closed in 2020.
