Terry Fox Memorial

Bronze statue where the Marathon of Hope ended

At the eastern edge of the city, on the Trans-Canada Highway where it meets Lake Superior, stands a bronze statue of Terry Fox mid-stride — the posture of a man running on one leg with his characteristic uneven gait. This is the spot where Fox was forced to stop his Marathon of Hope on 1 September 1980, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres, when his cancer had spread to his lungs. He died the following June.

The memorial is understated and effective. Lake Superior stretches behind it, and on a clear day the Sleeping Giant is visible in the distance. Worth stopping even if you're just passing through.
