Kakabeka Falls

40-metre 'Niagara of the North' on the Kaministiquia River

Kakabeka Falls drops 40 metres over a sheer escarpment of layered shale on the Kaministiquia River, about 30 kilometres west of Thunder Bay. The volume of water — particularly during spring melt — and the dark, fossil-rich rock face have earned it the nickname "the Niagara of the North." A network of boardwalks gives close-up views from both sides of the gorge.

The surrounding provincial park has camping, swimming above the falls in summer, and a short trail down to the base. It is one of the easiest substantial day trips from Thunder Bay and worth the half hour out of town. The viewing platforms are accessible.

A story
Anishinaabe legend tells of Green Mantle, the daughter of Chief Ogama, who lured a Dakota war party over the falls by leading them downriver in a canoe, knowing she would die with them. The bend in the river above the falls is named for her.
