The most prominent landform inside city limits, Mount McKay rises 305 metres above the Kaministiquia River on the Fort William First Nation reserve south of the city. The flat-topped basalt mesa was sacred to the Anishinaabe long before European arrival and still holds ceremonial importance. A road climbs to a lookout near the summit; from there the view takes in the entire bay, the Sleeping Giant, and on a clear day stretches well into Minnesota.
Access is via a paid scenic drive through Fort William First Nation lands. There is a small interpretive area at the lookout and short walking trails along the rim. Best at sunrise or sunset.
