A 650-hectare protected forest covering the peninsula behind El Remate, run as a research biotope by Universidad de San Carlos. Two trails — about 3 km and 6 km — loop through dry tropical forest with mahogany, ceiba, and cohune palm; birdlife is varied, howler and spider monkeys are routinely visible, and a small mirador on the upper trail looks back south across Lake Peten Itza.
Entrance is just outside El Remate village; a small fee covers a hand-drawn trail map. Bring water; the morning hours before about 10am are the easiest for both heat and wildlife.
