El Remate

A scrappy roadside village on the eastern arm of Lake Peten Itza, 30 kilometres from Flores on the Tikal road. The reason to come is the lakeshore: clean water, quiet beaches, and a string of small lakeside hotels and restaurants that are a more peaceful alternative to staying in Flores itself.

Cerro Cahui, the small Biotopo protected forest on the peninsula behind the village, has a couple of short walking trails through cohune-palm jungle with a good chance of howler monkeys overhead. Many travellers stop here for a swim and lunch on the way back from Tikal.
