Laguna de Juluapan

The Juluapan Lagoon, behind the Santiago Peninsula, is a long mangrove-lined inlet best known for its crocodiles, iguanas, and migratory birds. Small boats run from the village of Juluapan into the mangroves; the trip is an easy hour and a half and reliable for sightings.

Outside the dry winter months the lagoon is rich in pelicans, frigatebirds, herons and the occasional roseate spoonbill. The mangroves are also a turtle nesting site protected by a community programme. Bring binoculars and insect repellent.
