Olas Altas — "high waves" — is the surfing beach on the open Pacific side, at the north end of Bahía de Santiago. It does not have the calm sheltered water of La Audiencia, but it has the only consistent surf in the area and a more relaxed, less developed feel.
The break works year-round but is biggest in summer when southern hemisphere swells push in. Boards can be hired from one of the small bars at the back of the beach. The undertow can be strong; the beach is for confident swimmers only.
