Mexcaltitán is a tiny island village in the lagoons of Nayarit, north of San Blas. It is low, flat, and car-free, with pedestrian lanes, shrimp restaurants, small docks, and a local claim to be connected with Aztlán, the legendary homeland of the Mexica.
The island is not packed with conventional sights. Its strength is identity: the boat approach through mangroves, the round island plan, the central plaza, the shrimp economy, and the little Museo del Origen that explains why historians and storytellers keep returning to the Aztlán question.
It is worth the trip only if that mix appeals to you. Come as a deliberate day out from San Blas or Tepic, not as a quick roadside stop, and expect the journey to be part of the experience.
