San Andrés Tuxtla is the largest town in Los Tuxtlas, the volcanic, humid, tobacco-growing corner of southern Veracruz. It is not a polished resort town, but it has a real identity: cigar workshops, old houses from its prosperous tobacco years, and a landscape that turns quickly from streets to green hills, lakes, waterfalls, and rainforest.
The headline sight is Salto de Eyipantla, a broad waterfall about 10 km from town and one of the classic stops in Los Tuxtlas. In the centre, the Regional Museum gives the town some historical depth, from Olmec material to the local tobacco story. Nearby Laguna Encantada is a small volcanic lake on the edge of town.
This is also one of Mexico's best-known cigar regions. Tobacco is grown, cured, and rolled around San Andrés, and factory visits put the town's economy into plain view. For travellers based in Veracruz or moving toward Catemaco, San Andrés earns a day if you want the working-town side of Los Tuxtlas rather than only boat rides and rainforest excursions.
